I just realised what it is that I envy about the career of artists. It is the element of the unexpected.
Life is just so much more exciting if at any moment something unexpected might happen in your career, the good kind of unexpected. Be it overnight fame or something less rare such as a great article about your work published by an admirer.
Of course good things like promotions do happen to careers all the time, but they move within the predictable realm.
